Pharmaceutical Care I (PHM 220 and PHM 320) is an exploration of the pharmacist's role in self-care as applied to the therapeutics of mild and/or self-limiting conditions. Criteria for appropriateness of self-care vs. prescription medication are developed, and fundamental principles of self-care are based on selection and use of non-pharmacological alternatives and non-prescription drugs. Students will apply the framework of a therapeutic thought process to identify, prevent and resolve drug-related and document pharmacy care plans. Format includes interactive lectures, simulated case presentations, role-playing, workshops, readings, 'free-write' and take-home assignments (both written and electronic), requiring group interactions, problem-solving and awareness of moral, ethical and legal responsibilities.
A number of asynchronous learning tools are available on these sites including supplemental references, clinical clips, online interactive cases, quizzes and a consumer website (CareNet). A number of communication tools are also available including exam review, mark retrieval and electronic threaded discussion conferencing (Knowledge Forum
).
PHARMACY 468
is a self-directed learning elective, focused on application of undergraduate curriculum teaching and learning in creating an online interactive patient-based case in a series directed toward an interprofessional health care audience. Critical appraisal of the literature is the basis for a lesson planned to deliver content and skills with meta-cognitive feedback in a multiple-choice question and answer format.
